Curriculum Intent

GCSE Textile Design, following the AQA exam board, is a dynamic and creative subject that enables students to express themselves through fabric and design. With an emphasis on developing practical skills, 60% of the assessment is based on coursework, while the remaining 40% comprises a 10-hour practical exam. Students will engage with a variety of textile techniques, fostering their creativity and critical thinking, while also enhancing their literacy skills through initiatives like Voice21 and Oracy, which encourage effective communication and collaboration.

In Component 1, titled ‘Botanicals’, students explore a range of techniques including batik, hand embroidery, free motion stitch, pattern consideration, and quilting. This component allows students to study the influence of nature on textile design, encouraging them to observe and interpret the world around them. Through practical projects, they will develop their technical skills and learn to articulate their design ideas, enhancing their confidence in presenting their work to peers.

Component 2, ‘Bodies of Water’, delves into innovative textile techniques such as wet felting, surface texture manipulation, the use of the embellisher, and machine-wrapped cord. Students will explore how water influences textile properties and aesthetics, promoting creativity and critical thinking. This component reinforces SMSC links by encouraging students to appreciate the importance of natural resources while developing a sense of responsibility towards environmental sustainability.

The exam, beginning in January and culminating in a 10-hour practical assessment, challenges students to apply their skills and knowledge in a time-constrained environment. This experience prepares them for future studies and enhances their problem-solving abilities.

Studying Textile Design can lead to A Levels in subjects such as Art and Design, Fashion Design, Textiles, and Design Technology. Beyond school, the skills gained in this course are invaluable in various careers, including fashion design, interior design, costume design, and textile conservation. This course not only fosters individual development but also promotes essential British values, encouraging respect, responsibility, and active participation in a diverse society.
