Who is the qualification for? 


The WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering (Technical Award) offers an applied learning experience, allowing students to acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and understanding through real-world tasks relevant to the hospitality and catering sector. It promotes personal development, literacy through Voice21 and Oracy initiatives, and a commitment to sustainability within the Greener Curriculum, preparing students for future career opportunities or further education in a dynamic and growing industry. 


What does the qualification cover? 


The Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering provides a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality sector, encompassing key topics such as: 


  • The principles of food safety and hygiene

  • Menu planning and preparation 

  • Customer service skills 

  • The significance of nutrition in food preparation 

  • Business operations within hospitality settings 


Students engage in hands-on activities, learning to apply their knowledge in practical contexts, the course is approximately 60% theory and 40% practical. This qualification fosters essential skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, while also incorporating SMSC education and British Values, encouraging respect for diversity and fostering community involvement. 


What can the qualification lead to? 


This qualification serves as a solid foundation for further study or careers within the hospitality and catering sector. Students who achieve at Level 2 may consider: 


A Levels in subjects such as Food Technology, Business Studies, or Health and Social Care. 


Level 3 vocational qualifications, like BTEC Nationals in Hospitality, Catering, or Culinary Arts, preparing them for various roles in the industry. 


Learners who achieve at Level 1 might progress to: 


Level 2 vocational qualifications, leading to technical routes or apprenticeships in hospitality. 


Employment opportunities within the sector, such as catering assistants, waiting staff, or kitchen support roles, allowing them to apply their skills in practical environments while contributing to their local communities.
