Who is the qualification for?
The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Child Development (603/7058/0) is designed for Key Stage 4 learners who want to gain sector-specific knowledge and skills by exploring vocational contexts. This qualification suits students interested in planning and adapting play opportunities for young children across five areas of development. The course promotes personal growth and confidence, supporting high level literacy through initiatives like Voice21 and Oracy, which help learners articulate ideas effectively. In line with British Values, the qualification encourages respect, responsibility, and collaboration, while also promoting environmental awareness through the Greener Curriculum.
What does the qualification cover?
The Tech Award allows learners to develop applied knowledge in child development from birth to age five, understanding how children learn through play and how individualised support promotes development. The curriculum focuses on:
Child development characteristics from birth to five years old.
Factors affecting growth and development.
The importance of play in promoting learning and development.
Why some children may need additional support.
Creating child-friendly environments that foster play and learning.
Supporting children’s physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development by adapting activities to individual needs.
The qualification not only promotes literacy skills through discussions, presentations, and collaborative work but also integrates SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural) education, encouraging students to appreciate diverse perspectives and develop empathy. The Greener Curriculum is woven into lessons, highlighting sustainable practices and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment. This qualification complements GCSE courses like English and Psychology, offering practical insight into child development.
